Extremely High Potassium Levels in 7 Week-old Baby Girl Jul. 23rd, 2008 9:35pm
I was asked by my sister to post this in hopes to find help for her baby. My sister and brother-in-law have 3 children with CAH. Her two oldest boys, 10 and 8, have the disease under control with medication. My sister gave birth to a beautiful baby girl 7 weeks ago. The baby lost 11 oz. in her 1st 6 weeks of life. After blood work, they found her potassium to be at 8.4. The high potassium levels caused strain on her little heart and she was put in ICU a week ago. They have tripled her doses of hydorcortizone, florinef, and sodium chloride. Today her potassium is at 7.6. They can not seem to get the baby's potassium to a normal level. Has anyone else had something like this happen? If so, what remedies did the doctors come up with? My niece has been in the hospital a week and it seems like all they are doing is experimenting with the medication dosage. No other action has taken place.
