Your doctor was most likely referring to Chronocort, a drug that is currently in development and scheduled for release within the next year or 2. Ideally this will mean that for non-salt wasters, one pill a day will suffice for normal life, with extra pills only required when ill or injured. Blood work will still need to be done in order to check that levels are acceptable, but as your granddaughter gets older these checkups will diminish, most likely ending up around every 6 or 12 months depending on what her control is like.
