But what is "bad"? Would it be bad for someone to have a flat tire? What if it was a woman, and the guy that stopped to help her asked her out, and they eventually got married? My wife and I first really met when she locked her keys in the car, an I helped her get the door open. A guy in Florida a while back had a flat tire on the way to the airport, then missed his flight. When he got home he found that that flight had crashed into the everglades, killing everyone aboard.
What about all the people who never realize the things that they thought were "bad" actually led to very wonderful things? Would anyone know who Helen Keller was if she'd never lost her sight and hearing? Would the "Little House" books have ever been written if Laura's sister had never gone blind, making Laura learn to master words so she could be her sister's eyes? There are so many stories of great people who only were able to strive for that greatness after tragedy. John Walsh's son was murdered, but through "America's Most Wanted" he has saved the lives of who know how many hundred of other people.
I'm helping to co-write the autobiography of a man who used to be a somewhat successful actor in the mid-seventies. It has been very interesting to learn that very few successful actors in Hollywood, weren't driven to success from some bad situation which made them focus their desires and talents.
Human nature is such that unless there's a reason for us to rise beyond our comfort zone, we'll be content to wallow in the muck of our complacency. That means that very rarely does something really good happen without it being brought about by something perceived as bad. Think of it as "no pain, no gain" or "Every flower needs a little manure at the roots" or my favorite, "It's only spoiled milk until we figure out it's really cheese."
