re: Need to know how I should classify myself.....
Sep. 20th, 2009   10:41pm
As you were diagnosed in childhood it is possible that you have either the classical Simple Virilising form of CAH or you may have the non-classsical milder form sometimes called LOCAH or late onset CAH. If your doctor referred to you as having a 'borderline' form then it is probable that you have the LOCAH - nonclassical form. The only way to know this for certain would be to find out what your original diagnostic levels were, as well as, your presenting symptoms.

Are you on longterm corticosteroids? If you are not on corticosteroids I suggest that some of these issues that you have, may be helped with the addition of steroid treatment.

Because of your CAH classification (possible LOCAH) I would suggest that you don't come close to being 'intersexed'in the true meaning of the word. However this is not to say that your emotional-social classification of yourself may seem to feel 'intersexed'. The medical profession considers CAH to be an intersexed condition or now called, a DSD - Disorder of Sexual Development, but this doesn't mean that all people with CAH are intersexed.

Some CAH people who are 'very severe' and who have been 'inadequately or not treated at all' may fall into the intersex category, as they basically have to transgender because of their CAH severity. In developed countries we rarely see this level of androgenisation/virilisation among CAH females now, but believe me it did happen in all countries before corticosteroids. Having said that there are still CAH adults who are difficult to define as to whether they are female or male by observing them.
