Scientists are only guessing when they say a gene does something. They are now diiscovering that even beyond what they think the genes do, other factors also contribute to growth and devleopement. It's also a factor to consider that gene more often than not serve multiple purposes, so doing something to one, to change one thing, changes many other things that will only show up later.
There are other ways of dealing with problems like that than played genetic roulette with arrogant scientists who are seeking more grant money based on wild promises.
