re: re: Abstract: Sexual orientation in women with classical or non-classical CAH
Jun. 29th, 2008   9:05pm

Did some of you not read the abstract correctly? Some of your responses seem less than, let me say, rational!

A quote from the abstract says: "Most women were heterosexual, but the rates of bisexual and homosexual orientation were increased above controls not only in women with classical CAH, but also in NC women, and correlated with the degree of prenatal androgenization". That's not saying that all females with CAH are homosexual, it's in fact saying that they are mostly not ... but there is an increased chance compared with non-CAH females that they may be.

M1 you are quite correct. Extra androgenisation of males would less likely produce homosexual tendencies....I don't know what the statistics are for males with CAH to express homosexual tendencies but this would be an interesting study. Perhaps the number of CAH males with homosexual leanings may be in inverse ratio to female CAH studies and this would therefore make the female study outcomes all the more interesting and statistically significant.......conversely it would be interesting to see for those CAH males where incomplete masculinisation is an issue (such as males with the 3-beta HSD deficiency and males with 17-alpha hydroxylase deficiency) whether they may have higher rates of homosexual tendencies. That would be pertinent to research as well.

This discussion is not about a moral judgement as to whether I approve or don't approve of homosexuality it is a research study looking at the facts of currents trends and tendencies. Doctors have anecdotally told CAH people in the past things like "you wont be able to have children because you have CAH" or "you may be 'gay' because you have CAH" but until these factors are looked at through research and quantified, then we don't really know for sure. Perhaps even in the knowing 'for sure' then some things can change to help the next generation of CAH people not to have to experience the same  pitfalls.
