Inter does not mean "two." Inter means "between."

And, as the medical profession uses it, intersex does not mean "hermaphrodite" even though that seems to be what  most people assume when they insist that their child is not intersex.  Yes, a true hermaphrodite would be considered to have an intersexed condition but not all people with intersexed conditions are hermaphrodites....big difference.

I can understand why people are upset with the term intersex. But I also think that it is their mistaken interpretation of the word intersex that is causing them to be so upset.   The ironic thing is: by constantly insisting that CAH should not classified as an intersex condition (i.e. my child is NOT a hermaphrodite..how dare you???) I sometimes think we HELP to keep the misconceptions alive.

Maybe another tactic would be to say....yes, CAH is often classified as intersex.  But, intersex does not mean what you think it means.  If WE all stopped thinking it was some sort of terrible word, maybe it would cease to be that to the rest of the world, as well.

(Just another way of looking at it.)

B.
