For those who have had kids admitted to hospitals in crisis - A couple of questions?
Jul. 8th, 2007   6:54am

Hi, we have recently had our 2 yr old SWCAH daughter admitted twice in the past 3 months for adrenal crisis. Both times we injected solu-cortef prior to taking her to hospital. We attended different hospitals and the treatment was a little different.

At one they loaded her up with cortisone & dexamethasone via IV within an hour of attendance (also saline & gluocse drip as she was quite dehydrated). Of course she bounced back very quickly and was 'wired' for a few days. Had an overnight stay for obs.

Today at a different hospital they seemed to rely on the fact we had already injected her & that all her vitals were ok even though she was very flat. They waited for IV fluids to kick in and she picked up marginally then started vomiting again so finally 3 hours later they decided to give her 10mg cortisone via IV on a 4 hourly basis. (She also had IV fluids). Within half an hour, she had picked up.

I wish we could have a happy balance, I think they should have given her cortisone initially rather than waiting for fluids to rehydrate her. Maybe not as much as they gacve at the first admission.

What has happened with your child's hospital admission? I am just thinking that maybe I am an over cautious mum...or I have mum's intuition?

The other question is, do you always have an overnight stay with a crisis admission in the morning?

Thanks, will be interested in other's experiences.

Michelle
