re: re: Medication effects on having children
Feb. 16th, 2005   10:38am

Hi Andrew,

Feel free to email me personally for more information if you wish.  I have 21 Hydroxolase Salt-losing and take a mix of Hydrocortisone, Fludrocortisone and Dexamethasone.  Prior to the birth of my little girl I took Prednisolone instead of Dexamethasone, but each person's regime is different depending on their physical needs and fertility differs  with CAH just as much as it does in the general community.  By having good control of hormones it means that being fertile is more likely, but obviously there are still differences in fertility levels.  As Lisa said, one of the first steps you may want to discuss is whether you wish to be tested to see whether you are a carrier of one of the more common forms and assess the risks and implications of having an affected child.  Regardless, any children conceived will carry CAH themselves, even though they may not be affected by it. You may also wish to discuss if you would be considering any prenatal testing as well.

Personally, my CAH was very well controlled and my hormone levels were within normal ranges and my health was also good at the time my husband and I were considering trying for a family.  We conceived unexpectedly easily.  Sometimes it is just the worry of trying to fall pregnant that can be half the battle (CAH or not!).

I hope this answers some of your questions.
